According to the research by Xlisting (excite is their major share holder), 55.6% of pages ranking within top 10 in Yahoo search results are owned by the sites listed in Xlinsting’s categories. They also says that 43% of Google top 10 pages and 40% of MSN top 10 pages are listed in their categories. They comment that “being listed in Xlisting category helps pages to rank higher in the search results.” I say, “their comment is misleading.”
Sure, being listed (linked) in popular portal sites such as “goo” and “Biglobe” helps, but it’s also a fact that my clients, who are not using the listing services, are doing just fine and ranking within top 10 (often times #1 and #2) in these search engines. The companies, who are willing to invest $400 to $1000 for the listing service, are most likely to invest in optimizing their site and the pages, too, and that’s probably the main reason for the good ranking. What I’m looking at now is the effects of Yahoo bookmark in the Yahoo search results. I’ve seen many Hatena’s bookmarked pages ranking well in Google’s search results, and I’m sure that Yahoo’s bookmark gives additional “kick” to the page’s ranking.
Google has announced it’s first quarter financial results in 2008 showing a 42% increase in turnover (revenues) from the same quarter in 2007. In the same timescale, click volumes have increased by a mere 20% showing the value per click which Google has generated is significantly up.
Of course, the actual number or value of clicks is missing from the figures - but if we assumed an average click value of $0.20 in early 2007 worldwide and averaged across all positions on the screen this would give an increase to $0.23 per click today - an increase of 15% which seems reasonably to reflect the increase in cost over the paid clicks generated across WebCertain’s global client activity in the same period.
As a percentage, the UK’s share of the global clicks has slightly delclined to %. Importantly, for the first time, Google’s revenues are now greater outside the US representing 51% - though this shift has partly been pushed by the declining value of the Dollar.
All in all a good set of results for Google showing no real slow down yet in growth - future quarters will show this up more clearly - but Google should end the year above $20 billion turnover worldwide.
According to goo Research’s report, 85% of teenagers and preteens participated in the survey said that they know (and use) video sharing sites. It shows that YouTube (57%) is the most popular video sharing site followed by NicoNicoDouga (13%). “Listening to music and watching music video” (44%) were the biggest reason why they use these sites, followed by “watching animations” (30%). It also shows that 26.5% of teenagers and preteens use the video sharing sites almost everyday.
Ok, this is not really a search news, but still a fun news about Google.
Google opened “Google Cafe” in Roppongi, Tokyo this weekend. Their “Google Sodas” come in several Google logo colours. They also serve light meals and deserts.
