When email marketing campaigns go international, it is important to remember to move beyond translation.
When reaching out to international targets, it isn’t enough to speak their language: you need to speak their culture too. A good example is global email marketing, where translating the email text into different languages isn’t enough.
A recent article by Derek Harding, entitled “Six International Email Marketing Challenges,” outlines the elements a company needs to consider when internationalizing email campaigns.
First, issues of form must be taken into account. For example, some cultures appreciate personalization, such as having the addressee’s first name appear in the salutation, whereas other cultures could consider this a breach of privacy.
Laws and norms concerning email marketing, and marketing in general, may also differ from country to country. To give a simple example, in the USA, prices are often quoted free of tax. However, this may be illegal in other countries.
As in everything, timing is crucial. “The local time zone must be taken into account,” Harding explains. “So should variations in when people work. Which days constitute the weekend vary across the globe. Holidays vary from country to country, as does when people commonly take vacations.”
