I know it might sound silly and perhaps no help at all, but after you got that error message did you close Studio, check that Acrobat Reader was not running, re-opened Studio and tried to import the PDF file again? Or tried again after re-starting your sys?
After viewing some files (any format, not necessarily PDFs) and closing them I do get (not specifically in Studio) error messages telling me the file is (still) open, even if I did close it. (On the same coin, sometimes I can’t move / delete folders, because I am told the file/folder is still in use by some appl I can’t pinpoint… I mean, it doesn’t seem to be a Studio problem, but a Micro :-D - I am running Vista, never happened to me with XP)
So far, I have imported many PDFs into Studio (SP1 and previous release) like a charme.

Прочитала с любопытством ветку, пришлось как-то пару раз делать редактуру машинного перевода для прямого клиента, по причине его желания сэкономить на переводе. В итоге, на один документ я потратила на 15 часов меньше, чем если бы я переводила сама, но - за счет игнорирования корявого стиля, принятых клише и устойчивых сочетаний в этой отрасли. Я старалась исправлять только явные ошибки, затрудняющие понимание. Очень надеюсь что Бог будет впредь миловать от такой работы. В ответ на чьи-то прозвучавшие опасения о возможности замены нас всех в скором будущем на операторов машинного перевода (просилось “доения”:)), должна сказать что у меня такого ощущения не возникло. Клиент был в состоянии, отчасти, конечно, оценить качество машинного перевода. Так что, не все так мрачно.
По поводу редактуры: На самом деле, у профессиональных редакторов понятия proofreading/вычитка или правка и editing/собственно редактура - это два разных вида работ. Час на 1000 слов - это вычитка, исправление мелких ошибок, типа окончаний, пропущенных букв, неправильно употребленных предлогов, пунктуации, и пр. шлифовка текста. А вот стилистическая, смысловая, терминологическая и иная тяжелая правка - это уже будет редактура, и, если таковая требуется, то часом на 1000 слов вы никак не обойдетесь.
Я заинтересовалась и поискала в гугле информацию по этому вопросу именно по причине этой круглой цифири, спускаемой агентствами. Я патологически в эти цифири не укладывалась. Пришлось взглянуть на вопрос попристальнее. Многие агентства, судя по всему, либо не знают, либо умалчивают об этой разнице. Поэтому, если предлагается работа такого рода, нужно обязательно оговаривать, что имеется в виду и приводить все это к финансовому знаменателю.

Очень согласна с boostrer-ом по указанным позициям. С тем только отличием, что я редактуру люблю. Очень любопытные вещи открываются в процессе. Ну и поучиться тому как нужно или не нужно делать бывает не вредно время от времени. Как-то сидела с полгода на одной правке/редактуре английского - узнавала переводчиков (не по имени, а по стилю, характерным ошибкам). Некоторых, очень, впрочем, немногих, брала для себя на заметку, в том смысле, что по ним можно было хорошо править терминологические базы:).

Otherwise proceed as Jerzy or I suggest. Anyway, you cannot realy tell which entries are crucial and which aren’t. I’m definitely not a registry guru, so I would proceed with extreme cautiousness: 1. Create a Windows recovery point 2. Create a registry backup copy 3. Return all Trados licenses (and those of any other programs managed online) 4. Start playing with your registy.

There is no need and we, as an individuals at Proz, have no “authority” to simply delete the language for which there is still a need on both sides (clients’ and translators’).

You have basically the following possibilities: 1. Make Office running under Vista: must be possible, simply ask someone IT-competent; or 2. Translate all OpenOffice documents with TagEditor 3. Translate all documents with TagEditor, except for ODT (Writer) files where you can use a tool similar to Trados or WF Classic, called Anaphraseus. It’s free.

J’ai eu la bonne surprise récemment de visiter le site internet d’un client pour lequel j’ai effectué le traduction d’un e-book écrit par lui même, et de retrouver mon travail massacré à la tronçonneuse (il n’y a pas d’autre mot).
De nombreuses expressions ont été changées à l’évidence par une personne qui n’est pas de langue maternelle française, ou qui n’a vraiment pas un niveau scolaire très élevé. Le niveau de langue employé est en plus très familier. Même le nouveau titre qu’ils ont choisi est risible.
J’ai contacté le client qui m’a dit qu’il était extrêmement satisfait de mon travail, que le relecteur n’avait rien trouvé à redire, mais qu’un de ses employés francophones retouchait tous les textes des divers ouvrages écrits par ce client dans un soucis de cohérence au niveau du style (Pourquoi ne lui confie-t-on pas directement la traduction, je me pose la question). Il va sans dire qu’il a une confiance aveugle en cette personne et n’envisage pas de demander l’arbitrage d’une troisième personne.
Moi qui pensait avoir été choisie parce que les traductions précédentes laissaient à désirer…mon travail a en fait été mis à niveau dans le mauvais sens.
Quelle frustration! Obligée donc de retirer cette référence de mon CV, de peur qu’un client potentiel pense que je ne suis pas capable de mieux que ça.

Du japonais vers le français, j’ai moi aussi le Concorde.
Pour être honnête, je l’utilise si peu qu’il ne m’a pas suivi en Australie. Pour les dictionnaires généralistes, je préfère mon dictionnaire électronique. En revanche, j’ai la manie de collectionner les dictionnaires papier spécialisés. je les dévore comme s’il s’agissait de romans.
Dans l’autre sens, le Grand dictionnaire français-japonais Shogakukan Robert est celui qui contient le plus de mots (à ma connaissance, deux fois plus que le concorde), même s’il n’est pas tout récent. Peu cependant être un peu difficile à trouver en version papier, mais existe en version électronique.
Dommage que l’équivalent n’existe pas (encore) du japonais vers le français…

I did the same thing, yesterday, and she obviously emailed me back that she was going to give me some news next week…
I answered to her (or him, I don’t actually know…) that I had discovered her job offer was a fraud and I didn’t want to receive any cheque… I don’t know if I have done the right thing…
If I ever get that cheque, I will just ignore it. I’ve been told nothing can happen to me if I just don’t change the cheque. [/quote]
One solution and the best, I believe, is to tell Paloma Spath that your schedule has changed and decline the job. It’s as simple as that.

J’ai utilisé le Petit Prolexis pendant des années et j’en ai toujours été très content. Je suis essentiellement passé à la version “grande” pour corriger les TU avant nettoyage. Au niveau correction ou options, je n’ai pas constaté de différence. Par contre, je préférai la présentation du Petit Prolexis (erreurs surlignées dans le texte) à celle du grand (liste verticale d’erreurs).
Je dirais donc que le Petit Prolexis a pour lui son prix et son ergonomie légèrement supérieure, tandis que Prolexis est précieux quand on travaille avec un logiciel de TAO.
