Getting the first contract and reference is a milestone in a freelancer’s career. Voluntary work is widely considered as an option. But how to choose whom to offer free help, and how to make the most of a first pro bono experience?

In this presentation I will consider a couple of common choices from participating in crowdsourced work, such as for Wikipedia, to working for NGOs focusing on the pros and cons of each approach. I will then try to outline a framework in which the participants get the most for their invested work i.e., a framework with a double aim: to provide pro bono linguistic aid to the beneficiaries, AND to help translators to get established, to network, and to work in a team.

By sharing my experience gained in sixteen projects of almost half a million words in total with the 80-member Solidarités team created on ProZ.com, I will try to show that many translators, including well established professionals, can benefit from such a cooperation. I will argue that such a joint effort can offer certain advantages that a paid work, completed alone with a short deadline, cannot.

Our collaboration with the French NGO Solidarités was taken to the next level in September 2009 with the creation of two internship positions. In the following months, interns followed a course of ten webinars on various translation-related topics from tools through terminology research techniques to business risk management and tips on getting established and worked together with over a dozen experienced professionals who gave regular feedback on their work. This experience is expected to facilitate their transition to the established translator status.

Attila, who founded the Solidarités team in 2007 and provided the ten webinar sessions to the interns (and other interested team members) will share his experience and the best practices learned in this period which can be useful in other mentoring programs.

Attila Piróth<br
Attila is an ATA-certified English to Hungarian translator, holding a PhD in theoretical physics, and specializing in various scientific and technical fields. He offers translation, editing, proof-reading and translation assessment, as well as terminology and project management services. He has over 9 years of experience, which includes the translation of 10 books (EnHu, HuEn, FrHu).
He taught translation and terminology for 4 years at Eötvös University, Hungary, for students majoring in science and minoring in scientific translation. In 2007, he set up the Solidarités translation team (www.proz.com/team/664 ), a team of volunteers providing linguistic aid to NGOs. To date, about 80 people joined the group, whose other aim is to provide a networking possibility for translators based on real-life projects, and thus help professional translators get established. In September 2009, an internship program was set up at the French NGO Solidarités (www.solidarites.org ) for two of our team members. In the framework of this internship program Attila held 10 webinar sessions to provide trainings for the interns as well as other team members (More at http://tinyurl.com/ap-training ). This workshop takes place over two consecutive days and comprises a theoretical component on the first day with Laurie, covering the Australian constitution, separation of powers, the court system and the process of court proceedings, and a more practical component on the second day with Sarina, including interpreting in the court and the role of the interpreter, a moot court plea hearing and panel discussion with the participation of professional barristers in a real court setting. There will also be a follow-up written assignment which can be sent and returned via email. This workshop is a fantastic opportunity to get a true insight into the workings of a real court interpreting situation and be able to learn from experienced court interpreters and barristers. A workshop not to be missed!

Throughout the morning, Karen Stokes will lead a hands-on workshop entitled Translation à la carte and in the kitchen, giving participants the opportunity to hone their skills in or try their hand at translating menus and recipes. There will be plenty of opportunity for discussion of the issues involved.
After lunch, Lulu Norman will talk about her recent co-translation of a book of Lebanese cookery, looking at what made this particular project stand out from non-culinary translation work.
To round off the day, Norma Tait and Alison Hughes present Our experience distilled, where they will consider the peculiarities of interpreting and translation in the whisky industry.

ITIs Masterclass: Financial Reporting Standards, Terminology and Style is led by top financial and accounting translators Robin Bonthrone and Deborah Fry from Fry & Bonthrone Partnerschaft. Their seminar is specially designed for translators who already specialize in this field and who are working into English. Participants should have intermediate knowledge (at least two years experience) of the field. This one-day seminar will be delivered in English.
Session 1 An overview of the International Financial Reporting Standards, including a discussion of recent events and an outlook on future developments, plus a run-down of primary and secondary resources of use to translators.
Session 2 Key terminology questions associated with into-English translation of financial reports.

Mediterranean Editors and Translators (MET) is an independent, non-profit association that brings together people who give language support for international communication in English within the Mediterranean and southern European area. METs meetings explore the nature of written or spoken texts in professional disciplines that communicate knowledge internationally through English, and the processes through which language support providers (translators, editors, coaches and other advisors) assist with writing, preparing for publication, or oral presentation of knowledge or culture in English.
